Millcreek Hosts Successful 1st Annual Awards Luncheon

The Millcreek Business Council hosted its First Annual Awards Luncheon earlier this month. Millcreek business owners gathered at Camp Tracy, located in beautiful Mill Creek Canyon, to celebrate and honor several of our outstanding business partners. Surrounded by fall leaves and the smell of crisp air, the event was even visited briefly by a moose family that strolled around the lake.

Martin Frey, Guest Speaker

Martin Frey, the first person to climb the Seven Summits and sail the Seven Seas, spoke to attendees of the 1st Annual Awards Luncheon about his deep love for the outdoors and his life experiences that sent him adventuring across the globe. Learn more about Martin’s incredible story on his 7Summits7Seas website and about Summit Journeys, a program he has developed to provide one-of-a-kind outdoor experiences for youth, young adults, and families right here in Utah.

Awards were presented to several of our outstanding Millcreek businesses based on voting by members of the Business Council. Congratulations and thanks to each of them for the work they do to support our community.

Wasatch Business Series Lunch and Learn Recap

On October 13, 2021, the Millcreek Business Council hosted a Wasatch Business Series event featuring Millcreek Common. The Wasatch Business Series is a partnership of several Chambers of Commerce from across the Salt Lake Valley including, The Millcreek Business Council, The South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, Holladay Chamber of Commerce, The Utah Independent Business Coalition, The Utah LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, Cottonwood Heights Business Association, and The Murray Area Chamber of Commerce. This partnership began to connect business owners from around the valley with different resources for their businesses. The Wasatch Business Series has hosted events with business experts and political leaders such as Mitt Romney and Ben McAdams.

Community members and business owners from around the Wasatch Front participated in the event. Jeff Silvestrini, Mayor of Millcreek, Mike Winder, Assistant City Manager for Millcreek, Aimee McConkie, Millcreek Common Executive Director, and Millcreek Events Director, and Josie Showalter, Millcreek Business Council Liaison presented to the group on the origins and progress of Millcreek Common.

The Millcreek Common vision began as city officials considered options to alleviate a development impediment to a highly developable piece of land. A fault line runs straight through the middle of the block, making it extremely expensive to build a building on the fault or within a certain proximity to the fault line. City leaders decided to build a public open space over the area of the fault to encourage developers to build in the adjacent parcels. The plaza space has been extremely successful in bringing developers from all over to invest in mixed-use buildings that will help alleviate the housing crisis in Millcreek.

The Common will become a gathering place for residents from all over the city (and the county) to visit and spend time ice skating in the winter and roller skating in the summer on the county's biggest ice ribbon.  A splash pad will provide summer fun for kids and events will be happening almost every day of the year.  Eventually, shops and eateries will line the Common providing a unique experience for kids of all ages.

After the presentation, all guests were invited to participate in a tour of the Millcreek Common site, where they were able to view the progress of the construction of the ice-skating ribbon, Pizza NoNo’s second building location, the splash pad, and the Adventure Hub building.
